What to Expect During an Asbestos Abatement Project

If you’ve discovered asbestos in your home or commercial building, you’re likely concerned—and understandably so. Asbestos, when disturbed, can pose serious health risks if not handled properly. That’s where professional abatement comes in.

At Peak Environmental, we understand that dealing with asbestos can feel overwhelming. Here’s a straightforward look at what to expect during an asbestos abatement project so you can feel confident in the process from start to finish.

1. Inspection & Testing

Before any removal begins, a certified inspector will collect samples from the affected areas. These are sent to a lab to confirm the presence and type of asbestos. Once results are confirmed, we’ll develop a site-specific abatement plan based on the materials involved, location, and project scope.

2. Work Area Preparation

To ensure safety and prevent cross-contamination:

  • The work area is sealed off using plastic sheeting and negative air pressure systems.

  • Warning signs are posted to restrict access.

  • Any HVAC systems connected to the area are shut down or isolated.

3. Abatement Process

Our licensed technicians wear full PPE and follow strict EPA and OSHA guidelines. The removal process may include:

  • Wetting materials to minimize airborne fibers

  • Careful removal and containment in labeled, sealed bags

  • HEPA vacuuming and wet wiping of all surfaces

4. Proper Disposal

Asbestos waste must be handled with care. All materials are transported to a licensed disposal facility, using clearly marked containers and a documented chain of custody to ensure regulatory compliance.

5. Final Cleaning & Clearance Testing

Once removal is complete:

  • The entire area is cleaned again using HEPA vacuums and damp wiping.

  • A third-party inspector (or licensed air monitor) conducts clearance air sampling to verify the area is safe for reoccupancy.

6. Documentation

You’ll receive a full project report that includes:

  • Testing results

  • Waste manifests

  • Clearance reports

  • Photos and documentation of the abatement process
